General Elections 2006
The General Election to the Tamil Nadu Legislative
Assembly was held on 8th May, 2006 to all 234 Constituencies in the
State. The
Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) led by Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi
,Leader of Dravida Munnetra
Kazhagam (DMK) obtained a
majority in the elections winning 163 of the 234 seats.

Constitution of 13th Assembly
The 13th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was constituted on 12th
May 2006.Kalaignar M.
Karunanidhi, elected from Chepauk Constituency, was elected as
Leader of D.M.K. Legislature Party. His Excellency Thiru Surjit Singh Barnala,
Governor of Tamil Nadu invited him to form the Government. H.E.
the Governor administered oath of office and secrecy to Hon. Kalaignar M. Karunanithi, as Chief Minister and to his Cabinet
colleagues at a function held at Nehru Indoor Stadium on 13th May
2006. |

Pro-tem Speaker
Thiru D. Sudarssanam, elected from Poonamallee Constituency was
appointed as Speaker Pro-tem by His Excellency the Governor.
He took oath before H.E the Governor at 5.00 PM on 16th May
2006, at Raj Bhavan, Guindy..

First Session
The First Session of the 13th Tamil Nadu
Legislative Assembly commenced on 17th May 2006. Hon'ble
Chief Minister, Hon'ble Ministers and Members of the 13th Assembly
took oath as Member of Legislative Assembly before the Pro-tem
Speaker at the Assembly Chamber, Secretariat, on the same day.

Filing of Nominations
Thiru R. Avudaiappan, elected from Ambasamudram Constituency and
Thiru V.P. Duraisamy, from Sankari constituency have filed their
nominations for the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively
on 18th May, 2006.

Election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker
At the Assembly meeting held on 19th May
2006 the House unanimously elected Thiru R. Avudaiappan, as Speaker and Thiru
V.P. Duraisamy, as Deputy Speaker.
